Spencer Haines, Technical Account Manager, Lawncare:
I’ve dedicated a huge amount of time to creating a lovely lawn at home (yes, it’s a classic British striped lawn!) and I really enjoy this time of year when you can look forward to a lush green lawn come summer.
Putting the effort in in April really does pay dividends in summer. Here are my top five tips for a flawless lawn this spring.
- As we come out of winter, you’ve probably noticed more moss in your lawn. Start treating it now with an iron-rich feed so it doesn’t take over – MossTop is ideal.
- Once the moss has blackened, scarify to remove it using a rake or a purpose-made scarifier. This will also take out any thatch that can prevent nutrients getting through to the roots.
- Overseed any bare patches using a high-quality seed like Premier Landscape and Lawn. This mix is suitable for a range of lawn types and is available in 2kg, 10kg, and 20kg bags.
- Once the grass is fully established, it’s time for a spring feed. Try Spring-Gem 14-3-10 foliar fertiliser - this will give your refreshed lawn a boost creating a strong and resilient sward.
- Finally, get into a regular maintenance mindset – keep an eye on weeds and spot treat them with a selective weed killer like Dicophar. Keep your mower ready for action with regular maintenance.
If you’re starting from scratch, April is also a great time to seed a new lawn. There should be plenty of moisture available in the soil in April, which is a great start for sowing, but you will want to make sure that the soil temperature is above 6°C and any risk of frost has passed.
Rather than reaching for a generic all-purpose grass seed, consider what you need from your lawn and what type of lawn you want to generate: a luxurious lawn, good grass for shaded areas, drought tolerant grass, or a low maintenance lawn – for example.
It pays to make the right selection upfront because often you’ll find all-purpose seed is not as resilient to stresses like shade, and drought, and you end up having to make repairs to it later in the season.
We can supply a huge variety of seed for different purposes, such as:
- Landscape and lawn seed - a mix of hardwearing grasses such as ryegrass and fescue – perfect for high traffic areas that receive a lot of wear and tear from children and pets.
- Luxury or Fine Lawn – great for areas that have a low footfall and need to look their best all summer long.
- Shady Lawn – for grass that still grows well even without direct sunlight.
- Drought Tolerant – water-efficient seed that creates a good matt of grass.
- Low maintenance seed – grows more slowly than generic seed so you don’t have to mow as often.
Enjoy getting out in the garden this April. If you need any help or have a question for one of our technical team, please just get in touch.
