What is Yew Scale?
Yew scale is a sap-sucking insect that lives on the leaves and stems of a yew (an evergreen conifer native to the UK, Europe and North Africa).
What Does Yew Scale Do?
Yew scale can cause your plant to lack vigour and will often cause yellow leaves. A black sooty mould can also develop on the honeydew that is excreted by the insects.
Yew scale can be identified as convex, oval 'shells' that are dark brown in colour and 3-6mm long.
Control:
We recommend using a specialist insecticide such as Hallmark Zeon or Decis Forte. Both products are synthetic pyrethroid insecticides so will work on a range of aphids, caterpillars, whitefly and other sap sucking pests as well as yew scale.
Sometimes the hard shells of the insects will remain on the plant even though the insect has itseld been killed. If you are concerned about the appearance of the scale shells you can use SB Plant Invigorator and rub them off by hand. This product will also help to wash off any sooty mould which may have grown on the plant as a result of the scale insect.
