Testing for Dry Patch 02nd August 24
The continued hot and dry weather can result in patches of dead or dying grass to appear on lawns. This can be where the soil has become hydrophobic - that is building up a wax-like material that repels water.
To test for hydrophobic soil:
1. Take a core sample of the affected area.
2. Place the sample under a slow dripping tap
3. If the water sheds off (similar to the effect of a wax jacket), Dry Patch is present.
Control Dry Patch with a wetting agent like Abzorb. This may require more that one application if symptoms persist, but will work quicker if the soil can be aerated prior to application and watered in.

The Red Menace 02nd August 24
Recent humid weather may have encouraged red thread to thrive in lawns. A common fungal disease, red thread causes patches of grass to look bleached on first inspection; a closer look is required to identify tiny red threads or small red clusters attached to the ‘grey’ grass.
Whilst it rarely kills the main grass plant, if left untreated it can spread and looks unsightly. It is caused by the Laetisaria Fuciformis fungus and can appear at any time of year.
Lawn professionals will know to check nitrogen levels in the lawn, and improve quality with regular aeration and scarification. I recommend my customers consider Dedicate or iron sulphate and a High N soluble feed (tank mixed) to tackle outbreaks before they spread. Please contact Spencer at Agrigem for more details.
